At A Glance
Rocky Chatwell has been riding for Crazy Fly for a few years now, the American wonder kid is one of the regulars on the PKRA tour and this is his pro model board. Rocky has a huge influence in the design of these boards and essentially these are the board he rides on the PKRA tour. This year the Rocky Pro comes in three sizes; 134 x 42, 125 x 41 and the 130 x 40 that we have to test here. They feature the full wood core and carbon laminate technology seen across the Crazy Fly Range. In addition there are excellent foot-straps and pads complimented with some high quality G10 fins. Being a pro model this board has a fairly wide stance on it, and there are no inserts for a handle. This is, after all, exactly how Rocky would ride it. The board is very stiff and the rocker is pretty flat. It also features a concave bottom. The board features very wide tips, which gives the outline a very square shape.
On the Water
The Rocky has been designed with a very specific performance spectrum in mind; ride the board in the sort of conditions it was designed for, to the level it was designed for and it is flawless. Flat water and the Rocky go together like peas and carrots. The flat rocker line helps the board maintain a high top end speed and the stiff hull makes for some insane pop too. You can really put all your weight through your back leg and power the kite up to maximum in the window, ready for take off, and the board just holds its edge. Landings are perhaps a little harsh; the stiff board means you really have to bend your knees. However, the concave bottom helps to take the edge off a little and the wide tips certainly give you a stable platform when you are coming in hard and fast. In the chop the board isn’t the comfiest ride, the stiff flex characteristics make the ride a little harsh, but it can cope. Just expect to ride the board over the chop rather than trying to hack your way through it. Flat-water, high-end speed is where the Rocky excels though, get it on some butter and unleash its full potential!
For
Very fast, super stiff board that is perfect for freestyle tricks and loading up the edge for huge pop.
Against
The Rocky isn't the smoothest ride through the rough stuff, but then the board wasn’t designed to be a super comfy ride; it is made to be fast.
Overall
If you want an out and out freestyle machine that will help you to achieve your top end kiting goals then the Rocky won’t hold you back.
