At A Glance

Airush have pumped out some lookers for the 2019 season, and the Apex V5 was the first we had the privilege of trying. A board designed for those of us who have a passion for both freestyle and big air freeride, and the experience to get the most out of it.

The Apex V5 has the classic Airush outline, with a relatively square shape, long rail lines, and a moderately flat rocker line. Added together, these create a freestyle specific shape with plenty of water contact for added grip, upwind travel, and pop.

The board itself is made with vertical layers of Paulownia wood in Airush's Multizone Biotech Core. This, in turn, is sandwiched around the new Fibreglass Nano Rod technology, which increases the durability of the board by inserting rods into the core of the board. Also, packed into the board, is the Reflex Glass, which is stiffer and more responsive when compared to the AR Glass found in some of the less aggressive boards in the Airush range

"A High Performing Board For High Performing Riders."

On The Water

The Apex V5 is fast, but comfortably so. Never did we feel out of control, and, as the board is designed for the more experienced rider, we enjoyed this ability, which results in bigger boosts and higher amplitude through unhooked moves — good upwind ability, absurdly comfortable, secure straps and excellent quality fixtures and fittings.

The Apex V5 has an uncanny grip through all water states, not only does this keep you secure when riding with bags of speed, but also enables you to hold down a mammoth edge before releasing to the moon. With this grip, of course, you do need to be a bit more enthusiastic with certain elements of your riding, being lazy won't cut it and you may find you trip on simple things.

The speed and grip come into their own with boosting, and landings are super smooth thanks to the flex, channels and rocker line. Unhooked, the Apex V5 produces bags of pop, again the speed and grip aiding massively here. That said, even at slower speeds there is impressive pop produced, and easily so. We did not use the board with boots, but with ABS reinforced inserts, we would be confident to use this as our go-to freestyle board such is the accessible performance.

Overall

The Apex V5 is a high performing board for high performing riders who mix it up not only with freestyle and big air but also between using straps and boots. Made to incredibly high standards, this board is polished in both design and feel. For those riders who need a board to keep up with them and will not compromise on performance, the Apex V5 is a sure contender.
