This spring in Charleston, South Carolina the Fort 2 Battery race will put sailors, kiters, and windsurfers on the same course through the iconic Charleston Harbor. Organizers are hoping to see over 100 participants in the downwind race that is set for April 29, 2017. Tim Fitzgerald from Ashley Hall Sailing fills us in on the details, below.
The Charleston Fort 2 Battery Race, a four mile downwind race between kites, Moths, cats, windsurfers and a even a few boats, is scheduled for April 29, in Charleston harbor. The race has become a massive event in Charleston and included over 80 competitors in 2016. This year’s race is going to co-op with a BBQ cook-off so there will be a Super Bowl Sunday atmosphere at the club for the race. Last year, fishermen and motorboaters tailgated at the club.
Last year we raced moths and kite foils on the same course. This year we’re running a “foil only” regatta for Moths, kites, Waszps and UFO’s on the bookend days of Fort 2 Battery Race. Last year, Sailing Anarchy live streamed the event and it was watched live by 7,500 people. Great fun!
