With its stunning coastlines, steady winds, and rich cultural history, Oman really is the perfect mix of adventure and tradition. In this feature, filmmaker and photographer Nikola Bagarov dives into his project with Majan Ospreys to show us what makes Oman so special. If you’re dreaming about your next big trip, this might just be the sign you’ve been waiting for!

Oman has become a hidden gem in the world of kitesurfing, where adventure meets rich cultural history and stunning, untouched landscapes. Our recent project with Majan Ospreys was created to showcase Oman as both a premier kitesurfing destination and a cultural journey, spotlighting the unique experiences and heritage that make it a must-visit location.

Although kitesurfing has only gained popularity in Oman over the past decade, the country’s diverse coastline offers ideal conditions for both beginners and seasoned athletes. Kitesurfing in Oman was brought by an Australian athlete, Miguel Willis, who was brought up in Oman. He was sponsored by: “Best” back then and was the first person to start kitesurfing in Oman.

From the sweeping beaches of Masirah Island to the pristine, secluded bays around Salalah, Oman has all the ingredients that kitesurfers look for—consistent winds, vast open waters, and breathtaking scenery. Oman’s appeal lies in its fusion of sport and solitude, where kiters can enjoy unspoiled natural beauty away from crowded tourist spots. Local entrepreneurs and international enthusiasts have also contributed to the development of kitesurfing in Oman, establishing schools and rentals and organising trips that invite visitors to experience the magic of this sport in Oman’s one-of-a-kind setting. Majan Ospreys, in particular, has been pivotal in promoting kitesurfing as a gateway to exploring the country’s culture and landscape.

The name Majan is associated with the culture of shipbuilding and copper smelting, which is described in surviving Sumerian language records. The ancient Sumerians had commercial and maritime links with Oman, which they referred to as the Land of Majan. Oman was famous for building ships for sale in those days.

As a filmmaker specialising in extreme sports and cultural storytelling, Nikola Bagarov was responsible for directing and filming: “Chase of the Trade Winds”. His work focuses on blending the adrenaline of sports with a cinematic portrayal of the environment and culture that surrounds them, and this project was no exception. Working alongside athletes such as Mostafa Abbas, Janek Grzegorzewski from Red Bull, Giel Vlugt from Core Kites and Luca Ceruti from Flysurfer, our team set out to bring Oman’s natural beauty and cultural depth to life.

Over two minutes of footage, we’ve created a video that melds exhilarating kitesurfing scenes with cultural immersion, offering viewers a look at the traditions and landscapes that shape Omani life. The short teaser reel, meanwhile, gives a quick glimpse of the full story, capturing the excitement of the athletes on the water and the awe-inspiring backdrop of Oman’s mountains, deserts, and coastlines.

Kitesurfing in Oman offers more than just a sporting experience. The journey takes visitors through the heart of Omani culture, from its bustling souks and ancient forts to the warmth and hospitality of its people. Oman is known for preserving its traditions, and even while kitesurfing along its coasts, visitors can connect with this rich cultural tapestry.

In collaboration with Majan Ospreys - who organises kitesurfing trips for those drawn to Oman’s scenic coastlines, our project emphasises that Oman isn’t just a kitesurfing location—it’s a cultural experience that leaves a lasting impact on anyone who visits.

Oman should be the top choice for those looking for an adventure that combines thrilling sports with profound cultural encounters.

This project is an invitation to kitesurfers and travellers alike to discover Oman’s allure. With its favourable conditions, welcoming communities, and unspoiled coastlines, Oman is ready to take its place as a top kitesurfing destination on the global map. Majan Ospreys can organise everything for your future trip to Oman.
