At A Glace
After what seemed like a mild autumn here in the UK, we suddenly had some proper wintery weather and a sprinkle of snow. This seemed the perfect time to test the new Prolimit Flare Steamer suit! However, I have never used a 6/4 before and frankly expected something super thick and cumbersome.
However, the Flare wetsuit is not cumbersome in any way; it is, of course, a winter suit with a lovely 6 mm NaturePrene2 through the body but 4mm on the arms and legs, making it quite flexible and not bulky at all. Prolimit has announced that, going forward, all their wetsuits will be neoprene-free and will use NaturePrene2 material. NaturePrene2 is a biobased rubber derived from FSC-certified rubber trees. You can find a lot of detailed information on the material on the Prolimit website, but from my point of view, it is a fantastic step forward in wetsuit technology.
On The Water
Once on, the stretch and flexibility for a winter suit are excellent, and it is very easy to put on, mainly because the AirFlex2 lining is super smooth and has a silky feel to it. The version I tried was what Prolimit calls Free-X, which has an asymmetrical front zip. It is easy to pull over your head, and there are no restrictions. I also didn’t find any water seeping through, and the seal across the neck felt secure without too much pressure.
This is definitely a suit that will keep you toasty warm during those cold winter sessions. There is not much compromise on flexibility, and this is mainly due to the innovative Zodiac2 with Velvet Airflex technology, which is the velvety fleece on the inside. It is very comfortable indeed. But what impressed me most was how quickly the wetsuit dried. I mean, it is not going to be bone dry within an hour, but for a 6/4, I was impressed.
Overall
If you want to step away from a neoprene wetsuit but not compromise on warmth or stretch, Flare 6/4 is definitely a suit to consider for your cold water sessions.
For me, it wasn’t just the clever materials Promilit used but also the aesthetic of the suit that appealed. I liked the deep navy colour, the slight texture of the top half and around the cuffs, and the way the ankle straps attach without the loops, but with a clever positioning of Velcro. But most of all, I really enjoyed how easy it was to put this suit on and take off, which, as we all know, is a massive bonus when you just want to get on the water.
