Wind and Weather
The best kitesurfing season is between November and June. From November to February, strong cooler winds blow from the north averaging speeds of 14-18 knots, for which we recommend kite sizes of 7-8 meters. From March to mid-July, warmer thermals blow from the northeast, typically averaging 12-16 knots, and we recommend kite sizes between 9-12 meters. The wind speeds drop between mid-July and October to 8-12 knots, which makes it a great time for kite foiling.
Getting Around
Given how remote the location is, the best option for getting around is to rent a car after flying into either Cancun or Merida. Cancun is a 3.5-hour drive, and Merida is a 3-hour drive. It’s also possible to take a taxi directly from the airport, which costs about MXN 2,000. Once you’re at the beach, the nearest village Rio Lagartos is a 40-minute drive away, or you can call a local taxi boat to pick you up from the beach, which can take you to town in 10 minutes.
Food and Drink
No supermarkets are nearby, so we recommend passing by Valladolid or Tizimin on your drive from the airport. There is a small dry goods supermarket in Rio Lagartos and several excellent family-run restaurants. The seafood caught and sold in Rio Lagartos feeds most of the Yucatan Peninsula, so it’s fresh. We can also put you in touch with a local cook who can come out to the beach and cook meals for you. There is fresh drinking water available at the villa.
Nightlife
There are no clubs or bars nearby—the most thrilling nighttime activity is to lounge out on one of the rooftop beds and take in a spectacularly brilliant starlit sky. You can also head into town to hit the restaurants and check out the rustic local bar. You can also take a guided nighttime boat tour of the natural reserve, where if the moon is out and the tides low, you will find a great deal of crocodiles in the nearby lagoon (they don’t come out to the beach!), as well as nocturnal species of birds and other animals. This can be a fun way to experience the ecosystem in the dark and take a different kind of adventure, gliding through the estuary waters under the moon. For the very lucky, this is the most likely time to see a jaguar, though it’s a sporadic occurrence.
No Wind?
In addition to kitesurfing, the ocean is ideal for sea kayaking and paddle boarding, and we can put you in touch with rental companies.
We also highly recommend you take the guided nature boat tour. Rio Lagartos has over 395 bird species, one of the highest species densities in the world. There are flamingoes, crocodiles, herons, foxes, eagles, cormorants, and many other birds.
We also recommend visiting Las Coloradas, bright pink salt lakes nearby, and the stunningly beautiful Ek Balam ruins. The ruins feature a cenote – a natural freshwater pool formed by a sinkhole – magical and perfect for a refreshing swim.
Rio Lagartos also offers excellent fishing for giant tarpon, baby tarpon, permit, snook, ladyfish, jacks, bonefish and more.
Internet
We have high-speed, low-latency Starlink satellite internet, which runs between 100-200 Mbps. In addition, cell reception on the beach, with 3G if not 4G speeds generally available.
Accommodation
All rooms in Nirvana Blue have ocean views and beach access, and every detail has been carefully designed to accentuate the landscape’s natural beauty. The villa floats over the low flora canopy and plays on traditional Yucatan construction to capture the refreshing, gentle breezes of the ocean. The professional open kitchen and living room are perfect for hanging out and enjoying meals together. In addition, there is a large palapa for meditation and yoga and two smaller palapas on the beach with beach chairs.
